I found that you can override by entering the total amount (standard deduction + charitable contribution) in the Gifts to Charity box. I think it is comparing the standard deduction to the total of itemized items and because the standard deduction is larger (for me), it uses that - and fails to include the charitable contribution amount. If you enter an amount ($300 or $600) in the "Gifts to Charity" box, the standard deduction amount is used (without including the charitable contribution).
